My Biggest Lesson from Year 1 in Marriage

Love + Relationships

Can I be a little vulnerable? This is a safe space right? Lol

We are currently 9 months into our marriage and it has been nothing short of amazing. They say that God designed marriage as a mirror and creates room for you to see yourself. Well I had a chance to see myself last night and it was pretty enlightening. My wife asked me to fold my clothes that has been on the dresser for the past two weeks and I responded:

“I got you bae ima do it soon.”
She responded in a nice tone lol “you said that last week.”

I was triggered because I try to pride myself on my integrity but she was absolutely right, I didn’t keep my word. In my mind, I justified it being okay because of how busy I’ve been with work, our church, and other responsibilities/ventures I have. God convicted me this morning and said remember what you promised me and your wife. You told me that your marriage will always be your first ministry.

You see in our premarital stage I asked God to show me my heart as I entered into this covenant. He told me your ambition and drive is what makes you who are but be sure to always make sure your marriage comes first.

I say all of this to say that it doesn’t matter how many schools I’m in charge of, people I’mc overing/helping, businesses I own, if my house is not in order, then that makes me out of order. Our value as men is not solely based on how much money we make, or how well our career is going but the true value comes in how we treat our spouse and steward our household.

I want to challenge all of the husbands out there to take a step back and see how we can improve in supporting our wives and our house. Because the Bible says he won’t even hear our prayers if we don’t.

"In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life. Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered. - Peter 3:7

Y’all intercede on my behalf as I prepare to fold some more clothes when I get home and join the dishes ministry at the Hill household. lol
